The first two were sadly predictable, but that third person clearly thought he or she had found a major flaw in my virtuous signal awakening. The thing is, my desire to smash patriarchy isn’t even that high on the Coming Soon Mortal Kombat 1 T-Shirt besides I will buy this list of reasons why I’m Mr. Tansley – but taking Phoebe’s dad’s last name is near the top. I knew long before we got engaged that Phoebe didn’t want to lose her last name. Her parents both died at a young age, and her name helps her feel connected to them. Keeping it means a lot to her, so who am I to deny her that?

However, my choice to adopt the Coming Soon Mortal Kombat 1 T-Shirt besides I will buy this name Phoebe was a gradual process rather than a momentary inspiration. The more we talked about it, the more I realized that I didn’t feel attached to my last name. I don’t hate Livesley – and I’m very close to my parents, whom I’m still lucky to have – but I wouldn’t miss correcting people on how to spell and pronounce it multiple times a day. . So why do I feel the need to keep it after marriage? Sure, we could have done like many other couples and each had their own name (the Twin-barreled Livesley and Tansley would never have worked). But historically, husbands have had a hard time getting into marriage – so if given the chance, why not go a little further and try to strike a balance? Having that option is a privilege. It barely smashed the patriarchy, but it probably made a small dent in it.
